“Greening Sri Lanka Hotels” Energy Efficiency and Natural Environment Sustainability for Sri Lanka Hotels Launch Seminar

This event unveiled the RTP strategic programme to make Sri Lanka Hotels greener and more profitable by creating cost savings through energy, water and waste reductions whilst addressing climate change concerns and competitive marketing edge. Mr. George Michael, Secretary- Ministry of Tourism as the Chief Guest and Mr. M.M.C. Ferdinando, Secretary- Ministry of Power & Energy as the Guest of Honor participated at the event. Greening Sri Lanka Hotels programme commenced with 34 hotels participating in a very ambitious programme to reduce energy water and waste in a hotels sector environment conservational drive. Among the first batch of participating hotels are the Aitken Spence, John Keells, Jetwing, Confifi group of hotels, Siddhalepha Ayurveda Resort & Spa, Saman Villas and Mermard Hotel & Club. These hotels are from the areas of Colombo, Kaluthara, Beruwela Bentota, Tissamaharamaya, Trincomalee, Galle, Hikkaduwa, Yala, Bandarawela, Kandy, Nuwera Eliya, Negombo, Habarana, Sigiriya and Dambulla.

LINC Project Educational visit and exchange,
‘Minimizing Hassle to Tourists & Building a Community Friendly Tourism Industry’
11th & 12th July 2008, Negombo
With the successful implementation of our hassle free & community livelihood support pilot project LINC Project together with the Riverina Hotel Beruwela and associated community groups, the RTP scheduled a further learning experience and an interaction with multi stakeholders for the 11th and 12th of this month. This programme was conducted in association with the Bentota Beruwela Hotels Association (BBHA) and the Negombo Hotels Association (NHA). Key objectives of this programme were; Learn how the Negombo tourism region operates. Hotels have taken the initiative to work with different community groups to address the hassle element involving the community, Provide exposure to Beach Operators (former Beach Boys) from Beruwela (Mainly the Riverina Hotel and representatives of the other groups) on the Negombo case study (No beach boys in Negombo) and also to reflect the positive change achieved through the LINC programme and plan the way forward, Provide an interaction with National Tourism Organization officials, local government representatives, RTP members, Beruwela Beach Operators/ community representatives/leaders and the hotel association members of BBHA & NHA, Recognise and appreciate the commitment of key contributing personalities.

Travelling with the Climate in Mind – Options between business as usual and staying at home 7th March 2008, ITB Berlin Germany.
The Responsible Tourism Partnership was invited to make a presentation at "Travelling with the Climate in Mind" event held International Tourism Exchange, Berlin 2008 Friday, March 7, 10:00 a.m. -13:00, ICC Room 15/16 by the Tourism Watch. Charmarie Maelge representing the RTP delivered the presentation ‘Carbon-neutral Sri Lanka – Long-haul destination of the developing world’. The event aimed to show that there are real and pragmatic options between businesses as usual and overly environmentalist restrictions. By assuming responsibility for the world's climate while still enjoying travelling – and staying in business as a tourism entrepreneur.

‘Community Tourism Workshop’ Sewalanka

RTP participated in a national Community Tourism Development Workshop that was held by the Sewalanka Foundation for a number of NGOs. The RTP was able to emphasis the importance of community tourism guidelines and the importance of linkages with the tourism distribution channels and the customers.
‘Towards A Carbon Neutral Sri Lanka: Building Tourism Partnerships’ Sustainable Tourism Forum on Climate Change

On the 11th of January the RTP engaged a wider group of stakeholders in the tourism industry and other related agencies to deal with green guilt.
This highly relevant topic was presented in several technical sessions and panel discussions by bringing together a very interesting panel of speakers not only from Sri Lanka but also from the Maldives and the United Kingdom, which includes Climate Change experts, key government agencies and strong environmental voices.Professor Mohan Munasinghe, Vice-Chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Co-Winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize & Chairman, Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND) presented a message discussing the topic ‘Climate Change & Global Warming - Opportunities and Challenges for Sustainable Tourism in Sri Lanka’
Content very broadly was global scenario on climate change, especially from UK perspective (TO and customer), Sri Lanka Tourism leadership in response to climate change what could be done as an industry in supporting, consolidating ongoing efforts and obtaining industry active participation as a collective measure . One of the key messages was also that all this is good business sense and will have a huge positive impact on the bottom line.

Arugambay Community Tourism Meeting

Subsequent to the familiarization visit made by the representatives of Arugambay Tourism Association (ABTA) Members to the RTP LINC project in Beruwela, a visit was organised to Arugambay to meet the community tourism suppliers. The meeting was participated by the ABTA, the Community Guides Asociation members together with the community leaders.
Face the Inconvenient Truth

To educate and create awareness on Climate Change the RTP conducted an open forum based on the film ‘Inconvenient Truth’. The basis of this event was that climate change is an important issue that we in Sri Lanka Tourism need to learn & understand. Actions taken by our markets- various government agencies, travel and tourism industry associations and mostly the consumers probably will affect our tourism business. With the WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY around the corner, the Responsible Tourism Partnership in association with the Sri Lanka Tourist Board took the opportunity to invite the travel and tourism industry members and their staff to attend a presentation/discussion on this very current and relevant issue.

‘Responsible Tourism Workshop’ for Cultural Triangle Hotels Association Members and Staff

Taking the sustainable message across to a wider stakeholder group, the RTP carried out a large number of regional workshops and seminars with hundreds of participants to educate and create awareness. The key events held were; on ‘Responsible Tourism’ for management and operational level staff held in the Cultural triangle.
Responsible Tourism Workshop for Hambantota District
5th- 6th March 2007, Hambantota
Taking the message to the regional tourism players, the RTP in association with the Hambantota District Chamber of Commerce (HDCC) and MERCY CORPS will be staging the first ever responsible tourism workshop for Hambantota District tourism stakeholders. This workshop will bring together a cross section of hoteliers, community based organizations (CBO), members of the Safari Jeep Association, government, non governmental representatives and the local authorities to understand and build common grounds for sustainable tourism development in the region.

Linking Crafts with Tourism
21st September 2006
Linking Crafts with Tourism workshop coincided with a volunteer assignment to assist in setting up an unique handicraft store in Dickwella, including product range, store presentation, guidance on promotional communication together with awareness creation on tourist needs and wants.The training was attended by 25 staff members of the Sri Lanka Handicrafts Board, including the Managing Director, Regional Shop Managers, Colombo Head Office Shop Managers, Sales Assistants and other Service staff.

Profiting from Tourism Business in the Future; The way Forward

“Profiting from Tourism Business in the Future: The Way Forward” - the inaugural responsible tourism forum for Sri Lanka was with invitations extended to a multi stakeholder audience including senior tourism professionals, government agencies, NGOs, and the media.
This highly relevant topic was presented by bringing together a large audience of over 125 participants and a panel of speakers including international tourism development strategists, key government agencies and strong social and environmental voices. Two overseas guest speakers from The Travel Foundation & Kuoni Travel Limited United Kingdom also participated.
